José Rosa

Jose Rosa In 1970, José Rosa completed the Joint Urban Manpower Program (J.U.M.P.) sponsored by Pratt Institute of Design, one of the country's leading design schools located in New York City. Focused on architectural and engineering design and drafting, J.U.M.P. provided experience in a highly disciplined environment. In the course of his studies, José learned the value "detailing" and "fine-tuning" as a part of meeting larger goals.

José worked his way up the architecture and design ladders, becoming a Rehab Specialist with Levenson & Thaler, an architectural firm that focused on urban re-development. The position was fulfilling in its involvement in improving the communities that José grew up in; however, José's desire to explore his creative side grew.

In 1978, José took advantage of an opportunity to travel throughout the Caribbean, working with different firms designing hotels and multi-million dollar homes. Of particular interest was the chance to be headquartered out of San Juan, Puerto Rico -- the homeland of his heritage, while working with the firm of Kevin Foley Associates.

This work eventually brought José to the attention of Fred Meyer & Associates of San Diego, California. His impression, upon arriving in "America's Finest City," was that this was a paradise in America. Before San Diego, the possibility of living in a place that combined the advantages of a modern, progressive city with proximity to unspoiled nature seemed remote. He was quickly drawn to San Diego county's rolling hillsides, picturesque beaches, dangling cliffs, and beautiful weather.

Regrettably, most of the work available was on tract housing projects that helped bring suburban sprawl to San Diego's backcountry. Quickly disappearing were the sage covered fields, grazing cows and gentle sway of oak groves. Instead bulldozers plowed the fields to lay concrete foundations, workmen slapped up identical stucco boxes and soon-to-be crowded roadways were cut in to the hills.

The cookie cutter design requirements based on the "profit at any cost" mentality of the major developers, combined with the bureaucracy, land-use policies and building codes, stifled creative energies and brought a period of introspection for José. At a crossroads in his career, he could remain financially stable but without hope for creative growth and independence or, take his experience and skills in a new direction.

This search led José to contemplation within the artistic and cultural institutions of San Diego, and eventually the artist colony of Spanish Village in Balboa Park. It was here that he became acquainted with his soon-to-be business partner and best friend, Jacquelynn Kresman, among many other local artists. José started showing and selling their art -- first to individual collectors, then galleries -- allowing Kresman and the others to concentrate on the creative process. His reputation grew throughout California's art community until he was representing, exhibiting, and selling the works of many talented artists through Rosa Associates Fine Art.

Activism on behalf of the arts community brought José into contact with business and community leaders. He founded San Diego's first full color, glossy fine arts magazine: Art in San Diego. He began working with the mayor in an effort to meet one of their mutual objectives: educating the public and supporting local artistic communities. This effort led to advising the new Public Arts Advisory Council and becoming a founding member of the Combined Organization for the Visual Arts.

José pondered the notion of bringing artwork to the public's attention in a more effective, easily accessible and efficient manner, utilizing the many advantages that computer-based multimedia productions could offer. This would require a full production team of designers, videographers, animators and programmers. The capitalization of such a large development plan would mean eventual loss of creative control to the investors. Because most of the capitol was earmarked for future payroll, an idea from his days spent working with community groups to redevelop impoverished neighborhoods took root and the blueprint for a new company began to develop. Instead of a reliance on Venture Capital and Merchant Banks, RosArt would be funded from the "sweat equity" of its work force.

It was from this vision that RosArt Multimedia Inc. was born. RosArt would be the ultimate melding of José's life experience. The organizational skills learned while coordinating between client, engineers and architectural staff plus large construction crews along with years spent working with talented artists, would now be combined with a team of dedicated technical professionals to create projects for small and medium sized companies, while maintaining a strict code of ethics, creative control and company direction.

RosArt is made up of people who put the quality of their work above most else. People who live and breathe art, design and technology and use their skills to help others achieve their goals. José finally found a place for himself where he could spend his time doing the things he loves, with people who share that commitment, for people who appreciate the efforts involved.
